Outside the Lines is a global online photo contest hosted by cizucu and open to every creator registered on cizucu. We select outstanding entries to showcase new talent on the platform and support photographers through the community.
This edition’s theme is “Beyond Theory.”
The horizons and verticals are not aligned. The subjects and negative space are unevenly distributed. The image may be blurred or out of focus. It may be far from polished, yet somehow it commands our attention. We sometimes encounter photographs like these.
Photography offers many established principles for creating beautiful compositions. Yet by stepping slightly outside them, an ordinary scene can reveal an unexpected expression, while something overlooked can take on a mysterious presence.
Whether intentionally created or born of chance, both approaches are welcome.
When you move slightly away from the compositions you have always taken for granted, what kind of world will you see?
We look forward to a photograph that captures a new perspective or discovery beyond the conventions of composition.

Is the hand floating in the light moving closer or farther away? The streaks of light make a single gesture look as though it is unfolding across several moments. The more we try to make out the shape of the hand, the more strongly we sense the movement left behind.

A person walks along the edge of the frame, with footprints left behind on the ground. The decision to include both shows the photographer’s eye for finding a story in the scene. Where did they come from, and where are they going? It is hard not to imagine what happened just before and after this photo.

The fluorescent lights are so overexposed that they seem to reshape the depth of the station itself. With the light standing out more than the people, a familiar station starts to feel like somewhere unknown. Instead of revealing the scene, the brightness makes it harder to see clearly. That contradiction is what drew us in.

Each person’s movement blends into the next, making the whole crowd look like one great current. By blurring the boundaries between individuals, the photo brings out the energy and rhythm of people moving together.

Not being able to see the person’s expression makes their presence stand out even more. The softly blurred surroundings and the black circle feel both humorous and slightly unsettling. What remains hidden gives this photo so much room for imagination.
