Nodeul Island is a riverside photo spot in the middle of the Han River, where you can fit the waterway, bridges, and Seoul’s skyline into one frame.
Photographers come to the island’s paths and edges to capture Hangang Bridge, the lights along the river, and the wide-open sky together.
Although the island also has performance venues and cultural spaces, it’s best to focus your photography on the outdoor riverside scenery itself.
The atmosphere at Nodeul Island comes to life from sunset through blue hour. With an open view to the west, sunset colors stretch across the river, and after the sun goes down, bridge lighting and city lights reflect on the water, making it easy to continue shooting the nightscape steadily. Clear days bring crisp contrast, while lightly overcast days spread the sky colors softly, which also works well for long exposures.
Start at the water’s edge where Hangang Bridge naturally enters the frame. Shoot the bridge slightly off-center rather than straight on to bring out both the repeating piers and the flow of the water. Along the promenade, include a railing or tree slightly in the foreground to create depth. With a wide-angle lens, give more space to the sky and river to reveal Nodeul Island’s characteristic openness. At night, shoot from close to the water and draw out the reflection to make the urban atmosphere more pronounced.
