Bugak Palgakjeong is a scenic overlook at a high point along the Bugak Skyway, offering a broad view of downtown Seoul.
It is easy to fit Seoul’s fortress ridgeline, downtown buildings, and distant landmarks into a single frame, so photographers often visit to capture sunsets and night views.
Since it is relatively easy to reach by car, it also suits a short photography stop.
The light is especially good from late afternoon, when the sun begins to dip, through just after sunset. With an unobstructed view to the west, the color lingers in the sky, and once the glow fades, city lights begin to appear one by one, making it a good time for blue-hour shots. After it gets completely dark, Seoul’s point lights become crisp, shifting the focus more toward night photography. Seoul city materials and local guides also consistently mention the Bugak Skyway Octagonal Pavilion area as a spot for sunsets and night views.
From the railing around the pavilion, first find the direction where the city opens up most widely. Start with a standard focal length around 24–70mm rather than a telephoto lens, so the layers of Seoul stack into view. Including part of the pavilion itself in the foreground brings out the atmosphere of the lookout, while moving little by little along the railing makes it easy to adjust the balance between the Seongbuk-dong ridgeline and the downtown skyline. On days when landmarks such as 63 Square and Lotte World Tower are visible in the distance, use a compressed composition to emphasize the density of the city.
