A traditional masked procession with bright pom-poms moving through a narrow sloping lane
A traditional masked procession with bright pom-poms moving through a narrow sloping lane

shantanu sarwade

Capturing this moment during the Raulane festival was a race against the clock. The narrow, sloping lanes were crowded with people, making it difficult to find a clear spot to stand. As the procession moved quickly downhill, I had only a split second to frame the shot through my viewfinder. The central figure, wearing a traditional mask and a crown of bright pom-poms, is the heart of the image. Surrounded by local women in their signature Himachali caps, the scene shows the living history of the mountains. This photo isn't just about a festival; it’s about the luck and timing required to catch a sacred tradition in motion, right in the middle of a busy, cramped street.
