Japanese-style squat toilet with tiled floor

TPinJP

The other Japanese toilet I began photographing Japanese-style squat toilets in 2019. Unlike Western sit-down toilets, squat toilets and their surrounding tiles are often vibrant, eclectic, and unexpected. Even in 2026, you can still occasionally open a bathroom door and encounter a Japanese-style toilet. However, many of the ones that remain are being replaced with modern toilets, especially in schools, public buildings, and coffee shops. Along with them, a quiet, unspoken culture is gradually disappearing across Japan.
