SIGMA Corporation has announced the compact, handheld telephoto lens "500mm F5.6 DG DN OS | Sports." The release date is February 21, 2024. Pricing is open, with a direct sales price of 495,000 yen (tax included).
This prime telephoto lens is designed exclusively for full-frame mirrorless cameras, featuring a total length of 234.6mm and a weight of 1,370g, resulting in a compact and lightweight build. It belongs to the "Sports" line, which combines mobility and robust construction.
Handheld Shooting with Outstanding Optical Performance: 500mm
Employing the latest optical design with special low-dispersion glass, this lens achieves high optical performance and excellent aberration correction in a compact form. Despite being a super-telephoto 500mm lens, it is significantly miniaturized, making handheld shooting possible.
It features a linear motor HLA for fast and precise autofocus (AF), and the latest OS2 optical stabilization algorithm offering up to 5.0 stops of image stabilization. This ensures exceptional performance for capturing fast-moving subjects such as in sports or bird photography. Additionally, the lens is engineered to resist backlight, suppressing flare and ghosting, and maintaining clear image quality even in scenes with strong light sources.

Compact and Lightweight Body with Superior Build Quality
Despite its compact and lightweight form, the lens delivers high weather resistance, operability, and the exceptional build quality for which SIGMA is renowned. The reduction in size and weight of the lens body is achieved through the use of high-precision TSC (Thermally Stable Composite) parts, maintaining performance without compromise. Advanced manufacturing techniques at the Aizu factory enable the production of large TSC components with micron-level precision and a refined finish.
The dust- and splash-resistant structure, along with water- and oil-repellent coatings, allow for use in demanding environments. The included slip-on lens hood also contributes to lens protection.

Comprehensive Shooting Assist Features
The lens is equipped with a wide range of assist features to accommodate diverse shooting styles and applications. Notably, it includes three AFL buttons that can be custom-assigned from the camera, an aperture ring, a focus limiter switch, and compatibility with teleconverters for L-mount. The three AFL buttons are positioned for easy customization by the user.
The aperture ring features both a click switch and a lock switch, enabling precise aperture control. The detachable tripod collar is made of magnesium alloy and is Arca-Swiss compatible. Furthermore, when paired with an L-mount teleconverter, super-telephoto shooting up to 1000mm with autofocus is possible.
