September Diary '26 was a global online photography contest hosted by cizucu and open to all creators registered on cizucu. By selecting outstanding entries, cizucu aims to discover new talent and support photographers through its community.
This contest’s theme was 〈September Diary〉.
September looks different depending on where you live. Some places are moving from summer into autumn, others from winter into spring, while elsewhere it may mark a turning point between the wet and dry seasons. The colour of the sky, the angle of the light, what people wear and how they spend their days—all these small local changes shape a September unique to each place.
A view that made you pause, time spent with someone, or something that moved you that day. Through each photograph and the words that accompanied it, we could feel the atmosphere and memories of many different Septembers, reaching across places, cultures and seasons.
This time, you shared your September days with us through your photographs.
Now, let’s take a look at some of the entries and the winning photographs.

A small figure appears behind a white curtain, with hands and feet peeking out. Bathed in soft light, the scene suggests a child playing by the window, and you can almost hear the laughter that might follow. The room’s quiet blue cast and the small accent of the red cord add to the mood. It turns an ordinary moment at home into something that feels like a half-remembered scene.

The turn towards autumn, and a turning point in life
cizucu editorial team
A discarded banana peel takes on a strange presence at the boundary between harsh light and shadow. Paired with the words “The turn towards autumn, and a turning point in life,” this small everyday sight becomes a symbol of change. The reddish tones and grain leave a lingering impression somewhere between reality and memory. What stands out is the way a chance encounter prompted the photographer to reflect on their own life.

A tower and illuminated signs overlap in the night, their lights bleeding into one another. The unfocused forms and spreading orange glow feel like a view through a window or a fleeting memory glimpsed while travelling. Rather than showing the buildings clearly, the photograph holds on to the humidity and glare of that night, making the rhythm of the city something you can almost feel. It reads like a hazy record of one September evening.

Somewhere in Busan, I found a little piece of Taiwan.

Against a deep blue sky, the yellow carriage glows in the evening light. The photographer’s description of finding “a little piece of Taiwan” while travelling in Busan makes the motif in the window feel like a sign connecting this distant place with home. The bold use of open space and the diagonal rails invite us to imagine the journey continuing beyond the frame. The bright colours convey the joy of finding a familiar memory in the everyday life of another country.

One eye reflected in a small mirror and a hand applying make-up create an intimate sense of tension. The dark hair filling much of the frame contrasts beautifully with the vivid red background and the light falling across the skin, turning a moment in transit into something like a scene from a film. By showing only the gaze in the mirror, the photograph leaves us wondering what the person is thinking as they get ready and what awaits them next.

September.
I was alone in a country I didn’t know.
You were all I could think about, and that was exactly why I decided to be alone.

In the blue light of dusk, scrolling text on an electronic sign overlaps with an out-of-focus figure. The distance between people whose eyes never meet echoes the words “I was alone in a country I didn’t know,” bringing out the feelings behind the decision to be alone. Orange light and the impersonal high-rise buildings deepen the stillness of an evening abroad. The photograph captures a September spent thinking of someone, along with the atmosphere of the city itself.

“Red Spider Lilies”

Red spider lilies and green foliage spread across the frame, their outlines dissolving into one another. By deliberately throwing the flowers out of focus rather than capturing every detail, the photographer allows colour itself to carry the feeling of the season. These flowers bloom around the autumn equinox and are one of the familiar signs of September in Japan. The blurred contrast of red and green has a painterly softness, leaving an afterimage like a landscape recalled from memory.

Dappled sunlight falls across the entrance floor, creating shifting patterns over the herringbone wood grain. The floral mat echoes the shadows of leaves, as though the trees outside have quietly made their way indoors. The photographer finds a quiet beauty in the aged texture of the floor and the changing play of light and shadow. Sunlight still carrying a trace of summer captures the unhurried mood of a September afternoon.
What did you think?
From scenes poised between seasons and the distinctive skies and light of different places to time spent with others and quiet moments at home, each September was brought vividly to life through photographs and words.
Even an ordinary day can become a page in a diary when it is photographed—a page we can return to again and again. Part of the appeal of photography may also lie in the way an image can connect with a viewer’s own memories and lead to a new story.
Thank you to everyone who paid close attention to the life unfolding around them and carefully recorded the moments that moved them. We’re grateful for all your wonderful photographs.
See you in the next contest!
