Even with the same subject, where you choose to shoot from can completely change how a photo feels.
Move closer and you begin to notice subtle shifts in expression and the texture of different surfaces. Step back and the surrounding scenery—and the subject’s relationship with that place—comes into the frame.
Just a few steps can make a photo feel intimate or leave it with a quiet sense of loneliness or tension. Distance does more than determine the framing. It also reveals how the person behind the camera saw their subject.
For this hashtag challenge, we invite you to share your photos with #distance!
For #distance, think about the space between your camera and your subject.
An expression captured up close, a lone figure standing far away, or the space between two people facing each other—near and far can each stir different emotions in the viewer.
When you move in close, look for details you can only see from that distance: part of a face, someone’s hands, or the folds in their clothes. Step back, and you can include the light, buildings, streets, and sky around your subject, showing the kind of place they were in.
Portraits, street photos, landscapes, architecture, still lifes, and travel shots are all welcome. Capture the distance between you and your subject and share it with #distance.
