You can’t touch a photo.
And yet, when you look at a rough concrete wall, soft fabric, a rain-soaked road, or dry tree bark, you can sometimes imagine exactly how it would feel.

Fine ridges and grooves, reflected light, and different shades of shadow. Even surfaces we usually treat as part of the background reveal a character of their own when we move in closer.

So this time, we’re holding a hashtag challenge with #texture!

For #texture, don’t just look for the objects themselves—look for the textures on their surfaces.
Cracks in an old building, rusted metal, the veins of a leaf, footprints in the sand, or the knitted loops of a sweater. Take a closer look at the world around you, and you’ll begin to notice patterns and textures you may never have paid attention to before.

The direction of the light can also completely change how a texture looks.

Bumps and grooves that are hard to see under even, front-facing light can stand out when light comes from the side, creating tiny shadows that bring the surface into relief. Reflective materials such as wet roads, glass, and metal may even capture the weather and time of day.
Step back, and the same texture may appear as a repeating pattern. Move in close, and it may become so abstract that it is hard to tell what you photographed.

Architecture, nature, street photography, portraits, still life, or a shot from your travels—any genre is welcome.
