As these mounts have matured, a generational shift has begun to reshape not only camera bodies but lenses as well. The emergence of what are commonly called “second-generation lenses” is emblematic of this transition.
What Is a “Second-Generation Lens”?
A lens’s core specifications are generally defined by three factors: its mount, focal length, and maximum aperture.
Manufacturers sometimes release a newly developed lens with the same core specifications as an earlier model. Such products are commonly referred to as “second-generation lenses.”
Within the X-mount system, for example, some lenses explicitly identify themselves as second-generation models, such as the XF 16-55mm F2.8 R LM WR II. Others, including the XF 33mm F1.4 R LM WR, effectively serve as successors even though their product names do not include a second-generation designation.

How Technological Advances Shape Second-Generation Lenses
Most second-generation lenses arrive with refinements that enhance their appeal as photographic tools. This reflects ongoing advances not only in optical engineering, but also in lens materials, autofocus motors, and other related components.

In the past, lens configurations were often tested through a process heavily reliant on the intuition and experience of skilled engineers. Today, computers can evaluate vast numbers of simulated configurations and identify an optimal arrangement of lens elements in far less time.
This has also enabled the wider adoption of aspherical elements, which were once difficult to manufacture and implement, helping suppress spherical aberration while reducing overall weight.
Are Second-Generation Lenses Always Worth Buying?
With performance enhanced by technological progress, second-generation lenses present an attractive option for many photographers.
Common improvements include more compact and lightweight designs, higher resolving power, better close-focusing performance, and enhanced dust- and moisture-resistant construction. For creators who already own a first-generation model, the prospect of upgrading may be highly compelling—budget considerations aside.

In practical terms, however, second-generation lenses are almost always more expensive than the models they replace. It is also worth noting that the resale value of first-generation lenses tends to decline after a successor is released.
Depending on the capabilities of your camera and your photographic approach, purchasing a first-generation lens at a lower price on the used market may prove the more sensible choice. The key is to carefully assess the specifications against your own creative and technical needs.
