cizucu Presents 'The Artificial Glow' | Challenge #386

‘The Artificial Glow’ is a global online photo contest presented by cizucu, open to all creators registered on cizucu. Outstanding works will be curated from the submissions, with the aim of discovering new talent on the platform and supporting the community.

This edition’s theme is <Artificial Light>.

Even after sunset, when people have disappeared from the streets, various lights linger in the cityscape.
Light spilling from the gaps in curtains of homes. Fluorescent lamps illuminating empty stations. Convenience stores open late at night, or streetlights standing quietly along deserted roads.

Artificial light reveals the presence of life, time, and someone’s existence without directly depicting people. At the same time, these lights left in the darkness can evoke a sense of presence, but also intensify the shadows of absence and solitude.

The people moving through the city, the light scattering and reflecting in all directions. The blurred signs and neon convey the city’s energy, while also distancing us from reality, transforming the scene into something far away. The interplay of people and light makes the night city pulse as if it were a living organism.

The playground equipment bathed in light seems to quietly inherit the remnants of a festival now ended. The amber glow illuminates the lined-up carousel horses and carriages, preserving the echoes of laughter and presence that lingered just moments before. It leaves the impression that only time remains, suspended in place.

The streetlights left behind in the darkness indicate that there is a path for people, while at the same time accentuating the silence of the empty night. The regularly spaced lights suggest the movement of people, yet their absence evokes a sense of solitude.

The neon lights seem less to illuminate people than to shape their silhouettes. While the figures are shrouded in darkness, the surrounding colors reveal the presence of someone there. Perhaps the city, through countless artificial lights, both reflects human existence and simultaneously transforms each individual into an anonymous shadow.
