Creators who are passionate about photography share their stories of cameras and the narratives they hold. The presence of a “beloved camera” reflects each individual’s philosophy and values. In this installment, we feature Mayumi Heule, who is devoted to the Canon EOS RP.

Since picking up a camera, photography has quietly become a time for me to face the emotions that arise within. This is a story about the relationship with the camera I have continued to choose to capture those fleeting moments where emotion and landscape overlap. We explore how, through photography, I confront myself and seek to gently resonate with someone else’s heart through my mode of expression.

The Canon EOS RP is a full-frame mirrorless camera released by Canon in 2019. Equipped with an approximately 26.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor, it delivers fast and highly accurate autofocus through Dual Pixel CMOS AF. Its compact body houses professional-grade image quality, making it a favored choice among photographers for everything from daily life to travel photography.

Since I first picked up a digital camera as a student, photography has become an essential means for me to record the movements of my heart and to engage with my subjects—and with myself.

Capturing emotions that cannot be fully expressed in words, and the atmosphere I felt in those moments, through photography has quietly become my form of expression.

The third camera I currently use is the Canon EOS RP. Despite being full-frame, its lightweight and compact body—about 485g—makes it easy to carry not only when traveling or strolling through the city, but also for those spontaneous moments in daily life when something stirs my heart.

I love how its lightness allows me to shoot naturally, just as I am.

During one journey, I was captivated by the sight of two brothers running straight ahead, and found myself instinctively pressing the shutter in the moment.

Though running in the same direction, the two boys would subtly check on each other, as if to confirm the other’s presence, moving forward with gentle awareness. In their relationship, I sensed a warmth of love that is conveyed without words, born from caring for one another.

Looking back at the photograph later, I was struck by how clearly that emotion was captured—reminding me once again of the power of photography.

I have always wanted to capture the beauty inherent in the unadorned presence of nature and people, and the subtle brilliance found in fleeting moments.

When photographing, I rarely look through the viewfinder.
By immersing myself in the scene, aligning my heart with the subject, and sensing the atmosphere and temperature with all my senses, I feel I can create images that are true to my own feelings.

I hope that the photographs I create in this way become a gentle presence, quietly accompanying someone’s heart as a warm afterglow.
