This photograph captures the shadow of a staircase cast on a wall as its subject. The orange hue at the top of the image and the overall warm tones suggest that the shadow is elongated by the setting sun. The uneven, stepped surface of the wall adds further character. To ‘photograph a shadow’ is to frame a canvas painted by light. By layering the reflection of glass and the texture of the wall onto the shadow, even the most ordinary scenes of daily life can acquire a sense of depth.

This image captures a lone security guard standing at the edge of a large building’s shadow. The interplay between urban architecture and shadow is always compelling, and while the structure alone could serve as a striking subject, the presence of the figure accentuates the scale of the shadow. The overhead composition invites us to ponder the role and context of the solitary person within this vast space.

A monochrome photograph capturing the everyday urban landscape. One way to utilize shadows is to convert the image to black and white or reduce saturation, thereby emphasizing the interplay of light and shadow. This method of drawing attention to chiaroscuro through monochrome is often more pronounced when depicting cityscapes surrounded by concrete and large buildings, rather than nature filled with soft atmospheres and warm colors. This work reaffirms the classic synergy between monochrome and urban environments.
