“If you pass through the torii gate, you’ll find yourself in a dazzling land of the past”—so sings Spitz, but even without passing through a torii, you may find yourself reflecting on the past when you encounter the unfamiliar typography on a rusted sign while walking through the city.
These nostalgic buildings and signs, which could be called the quintessential Japanese landscape, may one day be demolished due to redevelopment or lost to earthquakes, and future generations may never see them.
This month’s mission is to become a time traveler—discovering and capturing those fleeting moments in time that only we, living in the present, can notice. Through these photographs, we aim to uncover the universal aesthetics and spirit of Japan and connect them to the future. We look forward to seeing works captured in lesser-known places, rather than popular spots.
