Mission
We often find ourselves viewing the world through the lens of grand narratives. Words such as gender, nationality, and religion can offer clues to understanding someone, yet at times they can also make it harder to see the individual standing before us. Before we know it, we may find ourselves observing events unfolding far from where we are through the framework of a predetermined story. Yet when we turn our attention to what is close at hand, we find the time we spend with others, our usual journey home, and the familiar landscapes that remain unchanged. The word “peace” may sound like something vast, but perhaps its contours can be found precisely in these unremarkable moments of everyday life. The theme of this Open Call is “Peace, from Here.” It may be about noticing the peace that exists right beneath our feet. Start from where you are. Notice the small moments of peace around you and preserve them in a photograph. Then, through that single image, let your thoughts travel toward someone a little farther away—or toward a place you have yet to discover.
