Canon Inc. has announced the RF10-20mm F4 L IS STM, an ultra-wide-angle zoom lens, as the latest addition to the RF lens lineup for the EOS R system. The lens will be released on October 27, 2023. Pricing is open, with an anticipated retail price of ¥376,200 (tax included).
This ultra-wide-angle zoom lens achieves a 10mm focal length—the world's first for an AF zoom lens compatible with 35mm full-frame sensors, excluding fisheye lenses. It features an image stabilization mechanism and, for the first time, incorporates "Peripheral Coordinated Control" to suppress peripheral blur characteristic of wide-angle lenses.
Compared to the EF11-24mm F4L USM, a DSLR lens introduced in December 2015, the new lens not only extends the wide-angle focal range but also achieves a more compact and lightweight design while integrating image stabilization (IS).
Ultra-Wide-Angle Shooting from 10mm to 20mm
With its 10mm focal length, this lens enables ultra-wide-angle shooting, allowing photographers to capture expansive scenes even in confined spaces or interiors, as well as dynamic perspectives of vast landscapes and celestial subjects. Covering up to 20mm, it offers versatile photographic and video expression, leveraging zoom flexibility for both stills and motion. The optical construction of 16 elements in 12 groups effectively corrects chromatic aberration throughout the zoom range, delivering high-resolution images with minimal color fringing, suitable for a wide array of shooting scenarios.
Equipped with the New "Peripheral Coordinated Control" Algorithm
The in-lens optical image stabilization provides up to 5.0 stops of correction, and when paired with EOS R series cameras featuring in-body image stabilization, coordinated control is achieved. When mounted on the EOS R3 (released November 2021), up to 6.0 stops of stabilization are possible.
Additionally, the newly supported Peripheral Coordinated Control improves blur at the image periphery, a common issue with wide-angle lenses, enabling stable shooting even in challenging conditions such as night scenes where camera shake is likely.
Reliability Achieved Alongside Compact and Lightweight Design
Leveraging the large-diameter, short back focus characteristics of the RF mount and camera-based distortion correction, this lens achieves significant reductions in size and weight. Compared to the EF11-24mm F4L USM, the weight has been reduced from approximately 1,180g to about 570g, and the overall length shortened from about 132mm to 112mm. Dust- and drip-resistant construction is employed in the mount, control ring, and focus ring, ensuring the renowned reliability of L-series lenses while maintaining a compact, lightweight form factor.
