『朝』セブの朝。ベランダに出ると、真下に青々としたプールが見えた。泳ぐ人影はない。水面は静まり返り、ただひとり、係員のおじさんが日陰でのんびりと涼んでいる。昨日、僕たちに「ハローーーー！」と元気よく挨拶してくれたあの人だろうか。いや、帽子が違う気もする。そもそも昨日は到着したてのアドレナリン大放出状態だったので記憶が曖昧だ。断定はできない。その彼がすっぽりと木陰に収まっているのを見て、あぁ、南国に暮らす人だってこの太陽には勝てないんだなと思った。セブの日差しは全体的に人間を試すようにジリジリと肌を焼いてくる。プールのまわりには誰の姿もなく、観光客らしき気配も感じられない。バカンス中のはずなのに、まるで夏休み中の校舎みたいな静けさだ。こういう朝は、いい。特別なことが何も起きていないのに、「今、わりと幸福かもしれない」と思える瞬間が、ふいにやってくる。ちなみに、昨日びしょ濡れになって、夜の家にベランダの手すりに掛けておいた海水パンツはというと、それはそれはからりと乾いているのだから、セブの太陽はすごい。部屋の中では、友人がベッドにくるまって寝ぼけ眼を擦りながら「エアコンききすぎだろ……」と小声でぼやいている。たぶん、この調子だとあと1時間は出てこないだろう。この旅はだいたい、そういう「何も起きていないけどなんか面白い瞬間」で構成されている。そしてそれが、僕はとても好きなのだった。
