‘ISSUE’ explores the sensibilities and thought processes of creators worldwide, serving as a wellspring of new inspiration. In ‘ISSUE #25’, we interview Takano, the representative of the Osaka-based community PiX Cypher, which produces exhibitions and photobooks rooted in offline engagement, and discuss their curated art book exhibition, #Images Osaka 2024.
A Community Born from Resonant Passion
In hip-hop culture, a “Cypher” is a traditional format where several people form a circle and improvise rap, freely exchanging ideas and elevating each other's skills. The name PiX Cypher embodies the desire to bring this spirit of the cypher into the world of photography.

PiX Cypher began as a natural gathering of people passionate about photography, regardless of whether they are professionals or amateurs. Takano, the representative, is driven by a strong desire to both preserve and invigorate the soil of photographic expression, creating offline spaces where members can freely exchange ideas, influence one another, and learn together.

The Irreplaceable Value of Offline Engagement
PiX Cypher places great importance on authentic creative experiences. In a society dominated by digital, they emphasize the significance of offline activities. By focusing on the unique qualities of works that can only be experienced in person—qualities that are difficult to replicate—they seek to pioneer new frontiers in photography.
“In an era easily swept away by the digital tide, grounding creation in the offline realm and seeking deeper relationships and understanding is of immense value,” says Takano.

#Images Osaka 2024 is a photography-focused art book exhibition organized by PiX Cypher. The event showcases photobooks, self-published books, and dummy books, providing a platform where photographers and artists can express their concepts and intentions through their works.
The event has evolved from a community activity where members would “create and bring a zine each month.” Each member, as an artist, shares their unique perspective and engages in dialogue with visitors. “It’s not difficult to experiment with photographic expression, and there are many approaches. I hope this event will broaden your perspective on photography,” says Takano.
The Enduring Allure of Photography as Object
A love for photography as a tangible object is one of PiX Cypher’s core philosophies. In fact, the community’s office is equipped with a printing press, supporting members’ creative endeavors.

The moment a photograph is transferred onto paper, it transcends being a mere image and is elevated into a precious object that can be passed down through time. “Through photography, a profound connection can be forged between creator and viewer,” Takano emphasizes.

Takano passionately describes how photographs are passed from hand to hand, treated with care, and offer a beauty that transcends mere visual satisfaction. Through this process, photography becomes deeply rooted in emotions and memories, fostering an even deeper bond between creator and viewer.
Illuminating Uncharted Territories in Photography
PiX Cypher aspires to create unique works that reflect individual sensibilities by pursuing free expression unconstrained by photographic trends. Takano reflects that we now live in a “truly wonderful era” where advanced printing technology is accessible, allowing anyone to easily materialize and enjoy their own photographs.
Their aim is to expand the freedom and diversity of photographic expression, providing opportunities for undiscovered talent to present their work. They seek to cultivate an environment where people can freely express their sensibilities through photography.
The community will continue to value both ‘seeing’ and ‘touching’, striving to create an inclusive space where no one is left behind as a creator. The door to a world of uninhibited expression is now beginning to open.
