A Journey with the Camera Born from Aspiration

Born in Hiroshima in 1975 and based in the same city, photographer sukko’s path to photography began with a serendipitous encounter. In the 1990s, when film photography was the norm, the profession of photographer was still a fresh and unfamiliar world. Yet, sukko was drawn to its unknown allure, discovering and embracing the camera through his work in the advertising industry.

Unlike today, where information is instantly accessible, back then resources were scarce. sukko learned through hands-on experience, capturing each frame with heartfelt intent. From the very beginning, he valued the emotional resonance of the moment over technical prowess. As the era shifted to digital, his photographic expression evolved accordingly.

The Joy and Liberation of Shooting Freely

The advent of digital cameras in the 2000s posed new challenges for sukko, who was accustomed to film. Adjusting to digital technology was initially difficult, and he struggled to redefine his approach to photography. However, discovering Instagram opened up new avenues for creative expression, instilling a sense of liberation—he realized he could shoot as he wished, transforming his enjoyment of photography.

Through Instagram, sukko discovered a new perspective on photography. The platform, where countless remarkable images are shared, became a space where anyone could freely shoot, edit, and express themselves. This shift in values captivated him. Reflecting on that time, he recalls, “I felt a sense of freedom to shoot as I liked, and it was refreshing.” This digital approach to photography, so different from his days in advertising, offered him a new and joyful way to engage with the medium.

Reigniting his passion for photography through Instagram, sukko began to pursue even greater freedom in his creative expression. For example, he would affix stained glass stickers to his lens to transform landscapes into dreamlike scenes—his unique creative sensibility became increasingly evident in his work.

Draped in the Colors of Hiroshima

The photographs sukko captures are of the captivating landscapes of Hiroshima, a place he deeply loves. His work documents not only the city’s renowned landmarks but also his adventures to unexplored locales, uncovering new facets of Hiroshima. By traversing these places on foot and encountering the “unexpected Hiroshima,” he hopes to share his sense of wonder and inspire others to visit the region.

One of sukko’s most recommended spots for experiencing Hiroshima’s beauty is the Sera Kogen Farm, where in autumn, cosmos flowers and autumn leaves create a magical landscape. He hopes to share this enchanting scenery with as many people as possible.

Encountering Magical Landscapes

Finally, we asked sukko, the official curator of the ‘Winter Magic’ photo contest, about the allure of winter photography. What does the ‘magic’ in Winter Magic signify? At the very least, sukko believes that for photographers, it is “the moment of encountering a unique landscape in the harsh environment of snowy mountains or uncharted territories.”

For example, he describes venturing into the mountains the day after a snowfall, choosing the tranquil moments before sunrise to photograph. The instant the sun rises and the snow begins to sparkle, as shadows stretch across the landscape and the snow reflects the light, he says, “It was so beautiful, words could not do it justice.”

While always mindful of safety, he acknowledges the risks and challenges of winter photography. Yet, he cherishes the opportunity to encounter the stories of fellow photographers and hopes to discover such magical narratives through this contest.

We hope you enjoyed this interview with sukko. If his story has sparked new ideas for your own submissions to the ‘Winter Magic’ photo contest, we are truly delighted. Gaining insight into the experiences and behind-the-scenes perspectives of a professional photographer offers a fresh viewpoint.

The submission deadline is February 17, 2024! Be sure to submit your work before the snow melts.
