The Story Behind the Creation of Windows XP’s Iconic Background <Bliss> | Knowledge #8

Do you remember the Windows XP background image? The tranquil balance of lush green hills and blue sky felt almost surreal in its serenity.

In fact, this single image holds a multitude of stories beneath its surface.

Heisei-Era Nostalgia Embedded in Windows XP

Released on October 25, 2001, Windows XP quickly gained widespread popularity for its user-friendliness and stability. It was an era when laptops were still a novelty. For many born in the Heisei period or members of Generation Z, memories may linger of a desktop computer at home and their first encounters with the digital world. When support for Windows XP ended in 2014, users were compelled to transition to newer versions, and this verdant hill gradually faded into memory as a relic of its time.

The Untold Story Behind <Bliss>

The Windows XP desktop background known as was photographed in 1996 by Charles O’Rear, a seasoned photographer for , in Sonoma County, California.

This serene landscape was, in fact, the result of devastation caused by the microorganism phylloxera (a type of aphid) that ravaged Napa Valley vineyards at the time. Over 50,000 acres of vineyards were destroyed, forcing farmers to re-cultivate the land. As a result, the scenery of Northern California was transformed into a picturesque, pastoral landscape. In 1996, O’Rear was captivated by the sight of these rejuvenating vineyards and captured the scene using a medium format camera and FUJIFILM color film.

Since the release of Windows XP in 2001, has been viewed by billions of people worldwide. While the precise reason for its selection remains unclear, it is said that Microsoft’s branding team found it perfectly embodied the 'peaceful' and 'tension-free' image they sought. O’Rear sold the rights to this photograph to Microsoft, making it the second-highest priced photograph ever sold by a photographer.

There is also an anecdote that, due to the high value of the image, no courier company would insure the negatives for shipping, so O’Rear had to deliver them to Microsoft headquarters in person.

In 2017, at the age of 76, O’Rear continued his photographic pursuits, participating in Lufthansa’s project ‘New Angles of America.’ He created and released three new wallpapers for smartphones. Perhaps, without realizing it, you have set one of O’Rear’s photographs as your own wallpaper.
