cizucu will host ‘Don't Think, Just Shoot’ starting Friday, June 30, 2023. “Don't Think, Just Shoot!” encapsulates the creative philosophy at the heart of Lomography.

In advance of the upcoming photo exhibition, we interviewed creators who regularly use Lomography, delving into its unique appeal and worldview, and gathering key concepts for the exhibition. Through these intuitive photographs—captured by following the heart’s impulse—we hope to inspire new explorations in photographic expression.

Through these interviews, we were once again struck by the diversity of creative approaches—there are as many answers as there are people, and we were captivated by the richness of expression. Let’s drive Lomography!

1. Please introduce yourself and tell us about your usual activities.
Hello, My name is Fung. I come from Hong Kong, born and rise in this city for 25 years. I usually take photos as my diary, recording my daily life such as travel and gathering events. I also love taking photos on the Street which give me a lot of joy and surprise.

Hello. My name is Fung. I am from Hong Kong and have lived here for 25 years. I usually use photography as a diary to document daily events such as travels and gatherings. I also love street photography, which brings me a lot of joy and inspiration.

2. What is the unique appeal of Lomography? Are there concepts or results that only Lomography can express?
I always use Lomo 800 for my daily film stock since it gives me great photosensitive in different situations, especially in low-lighting situations. Besides, Lomography has fabulous colors and gorgeous grain.

I usually keep Lomo 800 in stock and use it regularly. It offers excellent sensitivity in various situations, especially in low-light conditions. Additionally, Lomography is known for its wonderful color palette and beautiful grain texture.

1. Please introduce yourself and tell us about your usual activities.
My name is Hideki Ito, and I live in Okinawa. I run a small two-room guesthouse called Somos in Nakijin Village, located in the northern part of Okinawa Island. Nakijin is an area dotted with beautiful natural beaches, and I enjoy surfing there while photographing local surfers with my analog camera. On days without waves, I create music.

2. What is the unique appeal of Lomography? Are there concepts or results that only Lomography can express?
I really love the motto of Lomography, “Don't Think, Just Shoot!” Sometimes the photos are overexposed, the subject is blurred or out of focus—what some might consider failed shots—but I find the experimental spirit and playful humor in all of it to be truly appealing. I also love shooting with color-shifting films like LomoChrome Purple and LomoChrome Turquoise. Much like using expired film, I’m always surprised by the unpredictable colors after development. The joy lies in “expecting the unexpected” and wondering what will come out next.

1. Please introduce yourself and tell us about your usual activities.
My name is Yuki Usuba. I used to enjoy shooting cityscapes and street photography with a digital camera, but since discovering the allure of film cameras two years ago, film has become my main medium. I now own over ten film cameras, both 35mm and medium format!

2. What is the unique appeal of Lomography? Are there concepts or results that only Lomography can express?
First, Lomography film is wonderfully “cheap” in the best sense. The ability to capture contemporary scenes with a retro nuance reminiscent of the 1960s is a huge draw. If I want to shoot an “emo” photo, I always reach for Lomography film, especially Color Negative and Metropolis. I also love the LC-A camera for its retro finish. It requires some skill with focusing, but it’s perfect for enjoying retro-cinematic photos with subdued tones and vignetting.

How did you find it? The unique expressions made possible by Lomography and the creators’ distinct worldviews made for a truly captivating experience.
