The Most Significant Difference: Framing at 28mm vs 40mm
The primary distinction between the GR III and GR IIIx lies in their framing. The lens specifications are as follows:
• GR III features an 18.3mm (28mm equivalent in 35mm format) F2.8 fixed focal length lens
• GR IIIx is equipped with an 18.3mm (40mm equivalent in 35mm format) F2.8 fixed focal length lens.
Compared to its predecessor, the GR III, the GR IIIx offers a narrower angle of view. Below are sample images curated by the cizucu editorial team.

There is no significant difference in the quality of bokeh when out of focus. However, the breadth of the frame imparts a distinct impression to the subject within each composition.

In summary, the GR III excels at capturing the “overall atmosphere and context surrounding the subject”, while the GR IIIx enables a “deeper exploration into the essence of the subject itself”, resulting in distinct modes of expression.

Editorial Reflections on the GR Series
One of our editors (J), who has been a devoted user since the original GR I, notes that while the GR series is ideal for street photography, its wide framing enables a uniquely objective approach to image-making—a key appeal of the GR line. The GR series draws photographers into the role of a “solitary urban observer.” From this perspective, the GR IIIx could be categorized as somewhat “uncharacteristic” of the traditional GR ethos.
Nevertheless, the GR’s compact form, exceptional image rendering, and honest approach to photography have fostered a strong sense of community among camera enthusiasts. The GR IIIx, as a natural extension of this lineage, may well have sparked a new GR revolution by unlocking creative potential previously unseen in the series.
