On the Way Home

“On the Way Home” is a global online photography contest presented by cizucu and open to all creators registered on the platform. By curating outstanding submissions, cizucu seeks to discover emerging talent and support its community through the platform.

This edition’s theme is the journey home.

At the end of each day, we all make our way back to our respective places.
A station platform bathed in twilight. City lights streaming past a train window. Time spent walking beside someone, or a solitary detour along a slightly longer route.
Even a familiar path can reveal a different landscape depending on the day’s light, weather, and our state of mind. The journey home quietly retains the lingering impressions of the day, intimations of the season, and emotions not yet put into words.

Whether you are heading home, returning from a journey, or walking on after parting with someone, capture the scenes you encounter along the way and the stories that remain with you.

Against the setting sun, the silhouette of a figure pulling a wagon and that of a child running toward them evoke the atmosphere of a shared journey home. The expansive orange sky and buoyant footsteps convey a sense of joy, as though neither quite wants the day to end. It captures the moment when an ordinary journey home becomes a special memory for a family.

The people gathered outside a takeaway bento shop and the figures hurrying past create the rhythm of the city at dusk. Long shadows and softly blurred contours suggest shoppers finishing their errands before returning to their respective destinations. This work offers a vivid sense of everyday life in motion.

A note from my mother. Since moving away from my hometown, I have returned only once a year. Perhaps it affected me even more because I so rarely see her handwriting now. Somehow, I felt as though I might cry.

In the brief handwritten note left on the table, the time and distance separating a family quietly converge. Even an ordinary message explaining where to find the key seems, when read in handwriting, to carry the voice and thoughtfulness of the family member who wrote it. This work captures the tenderness of everyday life, newly recognized through the act of returning home.

On my way home from university.
It was so beautiful that I nearly missed the train taking me to my part-time job.

The low evening sun bathes the street in gold, casting a long shadow from the cyclist moving through the frame. For just a few minutes, a familiar road assumes a different expression, conveying the irresistible urge to stop and take it in. Capturing an unexpected moment of beauty while hurrying toward the next engagement, this is a work uniquely shaped by the journey home.

Evening light filtering into the car gently illuminates the sleeping child’s cheeks and hair. The unguarded expression, surrendered to the motion of the journey, conveys the contentment of a day spent playing to exhaustion. This work preserves, with a tender gaze, the quiet interval found only on the way home.

Taika Waiting for Someone to Come Home

cizucu Editorial Team
The dog waiting for someone to return conveys the quiet passage of time. Beyond its gaze lies the presence of a family member who has yet to enter the frame, allowing the narrative to extend beyond the boundaries of the work. Its perspective on “the journey home”—seen not through the returning figure, but through the one who waits—is particularly compelling.
