“monochrome”

Some things only become visible when color falls away.
Light and shadow, texture, contours, and negative space.
In the world of monochrome, the scene before our eyes is quietly distilled to its essence.

Precisely because the image does not rely on vivid color,
a single shaft of light, a deep shadow, or the faintest shift in expression
can resonate all the more powerfully with the viewer.

What lies within the space between black and white that you chose to frame?
Show us a moment that is uniquely yours—one that emerges only through monochrome.

Amid the expansive stadium, the figure of an athlete folding their body quietly draws the eye. The foreground shadow acts as a frame, bringing the distant spectators and buildings into a single, tautly composed scene. Monochrome accentuates the lines of the athlete’s muscles and the track, conveying concentration, exhaustion, and lingering emotion all at once.

A solitary figure standing small within the vast landscape evokes the quiet passage of time. The monochrome tonal range gently reveals the texture of the illuminated ground and the atmosphere surrounding it, as though even the temperature of the landscape were perceptible. By situating the figure within generous negative space, the composition subtly impresses upon us both the immensity of nature and the fragility of human presence.

Strong backlighting transforms the figures into silhouettes, quietly revealing a threshold in time that could be either dawn or dusk. In the absence of color, the people moving toward the light—and the distances between them—take on a more symbolic quality. Together with the grainy texture, the scene carries the lingering resonance of a landscape stored deep within memory.

Layers of raindrops and reflections on glass render the city at night like a landscape suspended between reality and memory. Although the passing bus and illuminated buildings are unmistakably part of everyday life, monochrome softens their contours and imbues the scene with a quiet afterimage. Diffused light drifts across the entire frame, evoking even the humidity of the nocturnal city.

The gazes and gestures of the three performers convey the intensity of the moment just before sound is born—or while their music is already resonating in unison. Monochrome brings the patterns of their clothing, the texture of the drums, and the gradations of shade beneath the trees into sharp relief, lending depth to the atmosphere. The narrative emerges not through color, but through expression, rhythm, and the movement of the body itself.

A square of light emerging from the depths of a darkened space quietly draws the viewer’s gaze. Its contours remain deliberately indistinct; precisely because the image does not clearly disclose what lies there, it opens a wider field for the imagination. Through the contrast between profound darkness and pale light created by monochrome gradations, an ordinary corner is transformed into a place belonging to memory or dreams.

Layer upon layer of light trails reveals the outline of the Ferris wheel like a structure from a dream. Monochrome transforms its revolving movement and the weight of the sky into a single, quiet image, creating the impression that time itself has been held still. Its very indistinctness lends it an uncanny quality, as though it continues to tremble again and again within memory.

The quietly expansive waterside and the figure leaning toward it evoke time unfolding at an unhurried pace. Monochrome accentuates the texture of the water and the tonal gradations of the rocks, allowing the entire landscape to resemble an abstract painting. Within a composition defined by generous negative space, the distance between nature and the human figure is rendered with gentle restraint.

The motion blur of people passing on the escalators overlaps with an illustration of a car on the wall, introducing humor and rhythm into an everyday urban scene. Monochrome contrasts lightly emphasize the figures’ movement, while the juxtaposition with the static wall is equally striking. With a playful eye, the work deftly captures a fleeting moment that might otherwise pass unnoticed.

The contours of the city and the silhouettes of its inhabitants overlap under intense sunlight, forming a single graphic composition. A figure holding an umbrella, a gesture directed toward the sky, and the commanding presence of distant buildings: each element is heightened by the contrast of black and white, lending an everyday scene a subtly surreal atmosphere. The film grain and scratches are also inscribed across the frame as layers of time.

Within the gathering smoke, a figure facing the fire quietly emerges. The powerful contrast between the billowing white smoke and the dark, subdued forest creates both tension and a dreamlike atmosphere across the frame. Precisely because the work is monochrome, the brightness of the flames, the texture of the smoke, and the figure’s solitary presence become all the more affecting.

In Closing

What did you think?

By limiting color, monochrome expression brings light and shadow, texture, contours, and negative space into sharper relief. Within the quiet gradations of black and white in the submitted works, we could distinctly sense the depth of a colorless world as seen by each photographer: an incisive gaze, traces of memory, and layers of time.

Discovering emerging talent—new pieces—yet to be seen: this is precisely the role we hope to fulfill through this project. We hope it offers an opportunity for your creative expression to resonate with an even wider audience.

We hope you’ll look forward to our next theme.
