Exploring West Tokyo’s Photographic Spots with takaomikim | ISSUE #254

This time, we spoke with cizucu creator takaomikim, who explores places where traces of everyday life linger in photographs, to share recommended photographic areas where you can truly feel the “temperature of the city.”

The selected locations are West Tokyo (Higashifushimi ~ Tanashi area), Kawagoe, and the Kobuchizawa ~ Kiyosato area. Each destination offers a different sense of distance from the city center and a unique landscape, but all share the quality of being places where you encounter everyday scenes that make you want to pause and take them in.

The regions I selected are places where “scenes of daily life” remain naturally intact. Rather than bustling tourist spots, I was drawn to landscapes that make you want to stop for a moment as you walk, or to the slightly nostalgic atmosphere.

West Tokyo, Kawagoe, and the Kobuchizawa ~ Kiyosato area each have their own distinct charm, but what they share is that “the everyday life of the place” naturally finds its way into your photographs.

The charm of West Tokyo lies in its relaxed atmosphere. Not only the cityscape, but also the people who live there exude a certain calmness.

Shrines and greenery blend seamlessly into the residential neighborhoods, and I’m drawn to how closely daily life and nature coexist. There’s also the Shimonotani Ruins Park, where you can sense traces of the Jomon period, making it a recommended spot for those interested in history.

Enjoy a leisurely photo walk while sensing the atmosphere where people once lived during the Jomon period, and take a break at a café or coffee shop when you need to rest. It’s a city where you don’t have to plan every step—just relax your shoulders and engage with photography at your own pace.

As you walk, you’ll find a unique sense of tranquility settling in.

Kawagoe, also known as “Little Edo,” is easily accessible from central Tokyo, yet offers the feeling of a short getaway. The city’s charm lies in how traditional culture and contemporary life blend naturally, creating a gentle, tranquil atmosphere.

You can also sense the community’s commitment to preserving and nurturing the unique character of Kawagoe, with locals and shops working together to maintain its appeal.

The city is lined with historic buildings, so simply strolling through the streets is enough to enjoy photography. I also recommend paying the admission fee to visit nationally designated Important Cultural Properties such as the former Yamazaki Family Villa, where you can photograph while soaking in the atmosphere of the past.

I still vividly remember the excitement I felt the moment I stepped off the train at Kobuchizawa Station. The mountains are so close and sharply defined, and I sensed that the people living here are truly embraced by the mountains.

It’s hard to put into words, but there’s something captivating about this land.

No matter where you frame your shot, the scenery is visually striking. Even an ordinary intersection has an atmosphere that makes you want to stop, and before you know it, you’ll find yourself reaching for your camera.

The way the trees and grass sway, the way the light falls—each element has its own expression, and it’s fascinating to notice the subtle changes in nature. It felt as though there were countless moments along the way that I wanted to capture.

This is a special place that makes you realize that even trees and nature have their own expressions.
