cizucu Presents 'Reading the Trail' Award Announcement | Challenge #339

‘Reading the Trail’ is a global online photo contest organized by cizucu, open to any creator registered on cizucu. The contest curates outstanding submissions, aiming to discover new talent through the platform and foster support within the community.

This edition’s theme was ‘Paths’.

The ‘paths’ we use for our daily movement are not pre-existing—they are created by repeated passage.

This is true not only for humans, but also for other living beings and nature. Movement, foraging, migration, and repeated comings and goings carve small ‘trails’ into the ground and space, and over time, these traces accumulate and emerge as a single line.

Packed earth, the way grass lies, tracks in the snow, shortcuts through the city.
Contours of living spaces are shaped by the continuous passage of people, animals, and the air that flows through them. We invited submissions that sought out and reflected on these lines left by movement.

Just as blood vessels circulate life throughout the body, this path carries the flow of people and goods, supporting livelihoods from within. This work offers a glimpse into the cycles that sustain the vitality of the land.

The accumulation of time, as creatures continually use this animal trail to reach distant destinations for foraging and migration, has shaped this path. Because these lines are carved out of necessity, even deep within forests far from human society, a tangible sphere of life exists, and the presence of its inhabitants is felt through this trail.

The multi-layered intersections of these roads evoke the immense wisdom and effort humans have invested in mobility. A single road is not enough; in cities where flows collide, we have supported movement by reconfiguring space three-dimensionally. This accumulation crystallizes in such complex structures, reflecting the history of humans reshaping space for movement.

Looking at the straight path and the torii gate ahead, one senses how people have imbued space with meaning through faith and pilgrimage. It is not merely a passage for movement, but a path for gradually preparing oneself to enter a sacred realm. The landscape reveals how local culture has taken root within its scenery.

This railway, threading through rugged terrain surrounded by trees, evokes the gradual progress of humanity as it carves out routes and builds civilization within nature. Rather than simply yielding to mountains and forests, people have confronted the undulations and left traces by forging paths. Here, I see the human will to move forward, contending with the forces of nature.
