Explore Malaysia's Photography Spots with Sui | ISSUE #126

I chose Malaysia because of its accessibility and the presence of “hidden paradises” that are still relatively unknown. It’s about 7–8 hours by direct flight from Japan, making it a convenient destination to experience tropical nature. While I’ve visited urban areas several times before, this time, I was drawn to the peaceful atmosphere of the islands, away from the hustle and bustle.

After taking domestic flights and ferries, you’ll arrive at destinations with crystal-clear blue seas, white sandy beaches, lush jungles, and a relaxed local lifestyle. Since these places are not overly commercialized, every walk offers new scenery and encounters with smiling locals. It’s a place where you can enjoy the luxury of “doing nothing” while holding a camera in hand.

Located about an hour by car from Kota Bharu Airport and another 30 minutes by ferry, the Perhentian Islands boast crystal-clear waters where you can see fish from the boat. The islands are not overly developed, preserving their natural beauty.

If you’re looking for a quicker and more thrilling experience, local boats are recommended. The powerful steering of the local captains and the view of the transparent sea from the rocking boat are unforgettable.

Focus on the horizon and the vastness of the sea and sky. Including the boat’s door in the frame can give viewers the feeling of being on the boat. If you don’t get seasick, capturing the waves and splashes can add dynamic movement to your shots. The key is to capture the true colors of the sea and the atmosphere as you see them.

Food is one of the easiest ways to experience a country’s culture while traveling. When looking for delicious local spots, asking the locals is always the best approach. Not only do you get to try new flavors, but simply eating in a local setting enhances the overall experience.

While I’m not particularly skilled at food photography, I intentionally captured the natural atmosphere and slight imperfections of the local setting. This approach conveys the authenticity of the location and allows viewers to feel the essence of the food and the journey.

Langkawi Island is a resort island filled with natural beauty, featuring pristine beaches and lush jungles. You can enjoy breathtaking views from the mountaintop via cable car or encounter wildlife while strolling through the jungle. It’s the perfect blend of nature and resort vibes.

I captured irreplaceable moments that seem to echo with family conversations. To utilize the soft light remaining after sunset, I avoided using flash. This approach creates a timeless image that always brings back memories of peaceful moments.
