Stories of creators who love photography and their cameras. A 'beloved camera' reflects each individual's worldview and values. In this installment, we feature masa, a devoted user of the FUJIFILM X-T4.

masa, who values staying close to everyday life through photography, shares stories about the beauty found in ambiguity. Photos don't always need to be sharp or perfect; instead, warmth and a texture reminiscent of memories emerge in blurred or unfocused shots. We delve into the charm hidden in such 'uncertainty.'

FUJIFILM X-T4: Basic Information

The FUJIFILM X-T4 is a mirrorless camera equipped with a 26.1-megapixel back-illuminated X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor, enabling high-resolution and high-sensitivity imaging with the high-speed 'X-Processor 4.' Its standout feature is the 'Film Simulation' function, which leverages FUJIFILM's expertise in color reproduction as a film manufacturer.

Years Bound by Focus

When I first started photography, I was obsessed with focus. Where should I focus? Is it in focus? Honestly, I used to think that the quality of a photo depended entirely on focus.

But after using the FUJIFILM X-T4, I began to think, 'Maybe the exact focus point isn't that important.'

Instead, the ambiguity of blurry photos feels nostalgic, soft, and charming in its amateurishness.

That sense of unfamiliarity in the photos transforms them into works that resonate with everyday life.

Film Simulation and the Beauty of Ambiguity

The FUJIFILM X-T4's standout feature, Film Simulation, doesn't diminish the charm of photos with soft focus.

The harmony between colors and textures brings photos closer to a film-like quality, resembling a snapshot from memory.

Using a lens with a low F-number to create bold background blur and intentionally soft focus—I'm now deeply drawn to this 'uncertainty.'

The Option of MF Lenses

After discovering the charm of ambiguous photos, I started using MF (manual focus) lenses.

From modern MF lenses like Vogtlander to vintage lenses mounted via adapters, I enjoy their tactile feel and imperfections.

The FUJIFILM X-T4 isn't particularly known for its autofocus capabilities, but that enhances the experience of shooting with MF.

By letting go of perfection and enjoying the thin focus plane, I feel like my preconceived notions of 'what photography should be' are unraveling.

Shooting Naturally

Now, I value a photo that feels true to myself over a perfect shot.

When shooting with MF, every movement—composing the frame, turning the focus ring—feels like it's being poured into the photo.

It may be a bit clumsy, but I think it's a way to cherish everyday life and take photos naturally.

The time spent with the FUJIFILM X-T4 feels like photography itself.
