Stories of creators who love photography and their cameras. The existence of a 'beloved camera' reflects each individual's philosophy and values. In this feature, KITA, a devoted user of the SONY α7S, shares their journey.

KITA values 'relationships' over specs and narrates the story of photography built with the SONY α7S. Amid the heated competition in the full-frame mirrorless market, this camera was chosen not for its glamour but as a practical decision. However, over time, this practical choice evolved into an irreplaceable companion. Let’s explore that journey.

SONY α7S: Basic Information

Released in 2014, the SONY α7S is a mirrorless camera equipped with a 12.2-megapixel 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor. The 'S' stands for 'sensitivity,' emphasizing its high sensitivity and video performance. Its standout feature is its exceptional low-light capability, with a standard ISO range of 100–102400 (expandable to 50–409600).

A Practical Encounter Turned into a Beloved Companion

Initially, there was no special admiration for the SONY α7S. The full-frame mirrorless camera I had been using from another brand had issues with magenta cast when paired with old lenses.

As a cost-effective solution to this problem, I chose the SONY α7S—a purely practical decision.

However, as I continued using it, that practical choice gradually turned into deep affection.

The Freedom of 'Low Megapixels'

Cameras in SONY's 'S' series prioritize sensitivity and video performance over megapixels. The 12-megapixel full-frame sensor is lightweight in terms of data, reducing the burden of editing and storage. This allows for a more relaxed approach to shooting.

Being able to shoot without hesitation has led to countless encounters with 'perfect moments.'

Additionally, the lower resolution discourages excessive cropping, naturally fostering a mindset to carefully compose each shot. Seeing a lineup of well-composed images during previews is incredibly satisfying.

Lightweight for All-Day Use

The SONY α7S excels not only during the day but also in low-light conditions, such as after sunset or indoors, thanks to its high sensitivity.

As a full-frame camera, it is remarkably lightweight and compact, making it easy to carry around all day without discomfort.

At the end of a day of shooting, the SONY α7S feels like a photo album filled with the day's stories, as if you've just completed a personal photo book.

Thoughtful Design for Snap Photography

Silent shooting, now a standard feature in modern cameras, was first introduced in the α7 series with the SONY α7S.

This feature allows for discreet shooting, blending seamlessly into the surroundings—a significant advantage for snap photography. It shines particularly in fleeting moments from a train window or quiet indoor scenes.

Additionally, the shutter button's placement near the dial, reminiscent of film cameras, evokes a nostalgic feeling, enhancing the shooting experience.

An Indispensable Companion

What started as a purely practical choice, the SONY α7S has, over time, become a cherished companion, thanks to its unique charm and enjoyable shooting experience.

While I also use the Leica M9 and share lenses between the two, each camera has its unique appeal, and I naturally switch between them depending on the location and purpose.

The SONY α7S is light, quiet, and enjoyable to use without pressure, yet it consistently delivers excellent photos. That’s why I still take this small companion with me when I head out to capture the streets.
