photo poster project | A New Way to Enjoy Photography by Tsukasa Kagaya | ISSUE #72

Since late last year, cizucu has been hosting the across various locations in Japan. By simply submitting your photos to cizucu, you can participate in the photo poster exhibition and meet new photographer friends you’ve never encountered before.
This time, we spoke with creator Tsukasa Kagaya, who participated in the .

Please introduce yourself!
Nice to meet you. My name is Tsukasa. I impulsively bought a camera when I started working, and since then, I’ve been taking photos for six years.
In the first few years, I didn’t know what to photograph, so I mainly focused on documenting daily life. Recently, I’ve become fascinated by the works of Saul Leiter and Takashi Yasui, which has led me to fall in love with street photography.
What motivated you to participate?
I had never participated in a photo exhibition before, but when I learned about the , I instinctively thought, “It would be fun to talk about photography with others who love it!”
On Instagram, interactions often end with a simple “like,” but at this event, you can directly ask others, “What did you see, feel, and think when you took this photo?” Through this experience, I felt that my own photography could expand.
I also wanted to hear direct feedback about my photos!

How was your experience participating?
It was so much fun that it felt like it ended in the blink of an eye!
At first, I was nervous, but thanks to the support of the staff, exchanging business cards, and the friendly participants, I quickly relaxed and enjoyed myself.
The photos displayed at the venue all had unique perspectives that I didn’t possess, and hearing directly about the thoughts and dedication behind them was incredibly inspiring.
Additionally, hearing someone say, “I really like this photo,” about my work became a cherished memory.
Why did you choose that particular photo?
Since it was my first photo exhibition, I was quite indecisive. However, I thought, “If I’m going to participate, I’d rather choose a photo that reflects my personality and ego than one that appeals to everyone.”
I love street photography, especially photos that make viewers wonder, “What is this person doing right now?” and spark their imagination.
Among those, I chose a photo that perfectly matched the theme of “love” and captured someone taking a snapshot they truly loved.

For those considering joining the photo poster project
Until now, I’ve mostly taken photos alone, posted them on social media, and called it a day.
I really enjoyed photography as a hobby that could be completed on my own, but through this participation, I realized that “showing your photos to others and seeing theirs” is also an essential way to enjoy photography.
That’s why I especially recommend this to those who, like me, have never participated in a photo exhibition.
I’m sure you’ll discover a new passion that rivals the allure of camera gear (laughs).
