What is the L-Mount Alliance?

In 2018, the L-Mount Alliance was suddenly announced by Leica Camera, Panasonic Corporation, and Sigma Corporation, becoming a major topic not only in the camera industry but also in the economic world.

This alliance jointly develops products using the L-Mount standard for mirrorless cameras, developed by Leica Camera AG. The L-Mount is a trademark of Leica Camera AG. Each partner offers cameras and lenses with the L-Mount under their own brand and collaborates on L-Mount technology development.

In other words, it means standardizing the 'mount' connection standard for cameras and lenses, which each manufacturer had developed independently. This groundbreaking initiative allows the use of different manufacturers' camera bodies and lenses interchangeably, overturning conventional wisdom.

Two New Companies Join

New companies have decided to join the L-Mount Alliance. Currently, the alliance includes Leica Camera, Panasonic Corporation, Sigma Corporation, Ernst Leitz Wetzlar, and DJI.

Two new companies are joining this group.

One is SAMYANG, a comprehensive lens manufacturer producing a wide range of mount lenses. This will likely lead to full-frame lenses for Canon RF mount, Sony E mount, and Nikon Z mount being available for the L-Mount.

The other is Astrodesign, a manufacturer of broadcast cameras, which was previously part of the Micro Four Thirds group but is now joining the L-Mount Alliance.

As a result, the L-Mount system is expected to have more affordable lenses and commercial-quality cameras, drawing attention to the future prospects of the L-Mount.
