Based in Kyoto and working internationally, Mitsuru Wakabayashi is known for capturing fleeting moments and rendering poetic landscapes interwoven with human presence. His solo exhibition, Mitsuru Wakabayashi Photo Exhibition #01, will be held at GALLERY METABO in Kyoto from Sunday, December 3 to Saturday, December 9.

Featuring previously unreleased works not shown on social media, the show is curated with a commitment to an immersive exhibition space that transcends conventional display methods and lingers in the memory.

Mitsuru Wakabayashi
Born in Kyoto, Mitsuru Wakabayashi transitioned from the apparel industry to photography after acquiring a camera while preparing for a working holiday in Toronto. He regularly shares his work on Instagram and now works with a diverse range of clients both in Japan and abroad, including commissions for Kifune Shrine, advertising, magazines, and social media platforms. His distinctive style captures the beauty of everyday life, often featuring people within broader scenic compositions, and he approaches his practice with an intent to create a photographic legacy.

In preparing for this solo exhibition, my aim is to create a memorable and unforgettable experience for visitors. While the conventional image of a photography exhibition is framed prints on display, I sought a more resonant approach, inspired by conversations with colleagues, to offer a unique and lasting experience. The exhibition will utilize two spaces, with one gallery room featuring an unprecedented display. To enhance the immersive quality, music for the space was composed by Ayami Yasai (@bud_envi). I hope that everyone who visits will discover a new perspective on the joy of photography.
During the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2022, I kept a photographic diary for two years, walking around my neighborhood daily. This period made me acutely aware of the beauty and transience of everyday life, and led me to reconsider the documentary nature of photography, fundamentally changing my relationship with the medium.
By not only sharing photographs on social media but also printing and exhibiting them, I hope visitors can more deeply engage with the intention and care behind each work. I will be exhibiting pieces that I have revisited and printed many times, inviting viewers to experience them as tangible objects. If you have time, I would be delighted if you could enjoy the exhibition at your leisure, perhaps with a coffee or a glass of wine in hand.
