Around 2016-17, I found myself to be going through a serious mental health crisis, navigating through depression, anxiety and being diagnosed with OCD because of some resurfaced childhood trauma. Soon enough I had to be admitted to a rehabilitation center and put on medicines to recover, and couldn't really see myself living my life beyond my early 20s. As I was homebound during these phases, Self-portraiture came to me as a way of trying to find stillness and meaning within all the chaos of my life through these years. It became a means of reconnecting with myself and my body and mind. It was kind of a reassurance of my existence when I felt that I had lost myself. Our itinerary included a village in the deeper ends of Kashmir. I was drawn to the daily life of the locals, how they travelled across the village and beyond, and their seemingly vanishing connectivity to the outside world. Among the many faces that I saw, this gentleman drew my attention. His quiet demeanor and slow movements welcomed me to look at the daily life of his village through his eyes. There was something about his presence, warm and welcoming, yet deeply reserved. In my attempts to not be overbearing, I was able to break through and had the longest conversation with him and I forgot about trying to find other villagers. I have no regrets about it as his point of view stayed with me and I plan to take it with me. It was his matured yet innocent expression that stayed with me. He had forgotten to smile in all his years of living in the village. Whenever I shoot portraits, I try to lighten the moment to make sure I get the most authentic expression from the subject. But with him, it felt like I would lie to the world if I did that. It, perhaps seemed unnecessary. His face carried a calm intrigue, still, composed, and full of unspoken stories. I was with my friend walking around the area and I happened to see this lovely couple having their pre-wedding photoshoot right in front of the water fountain at the venue. I realised I had another angle that's a bit closer to the couple than what the photographer intended, and I decided to take my shot! I love seeing wedding photography / videography, as somebody who did wedding videography before. My vision for this photo is, well, I hope everyone in their lives, be it single or attached or married, I hope that you (as the black shirt man) remember to love yourself while loving your inner child / your partner / your spouse (as the woman in the wedding dress). The shadows of the Woman's feet being lifted up by the man represents that, everyone regardless of their marital status, should have love in their life where they can overcome any obstacles together and be happy / contented with oneself (be it alone or as a nucleus). The natural Rainbow formed behind them was such a magnificent feature to be present in their photo. I hope everyone can remember that there are different colours to defining love and our feelings, because love is never a fixed shade or colour.
