Over the 15 years I spent living next to her we chatted & exchanged views on all sorts - politics, jokes & inevitably, sometimes the weather. Her stories about previous generations of people who lived on our road were fascinating - the lady who lived in the house before her said that, during the war, a bomb dropped in our garden! Sarah used to be part of the Portobello arts scene in the 60's, so understands creative expression. When I suggested a photoshoot she was very much up for it. It means a lot to me, especially now, because this marks my 20th year practicing photography, both as a job and as something I genuinely love. Looking back, this image feels like a reminder of how far I’ve come. Everything was so pure back then, still a little naive. Money mattered, sure, but it was never the source of happiness. I just wanted to shoot. If I didn’t have the budget for models or fancy props, I’d make do with whatever was around in the studio I was working at. Maybe this image didn’t fully make sense to me at that point in time but it does now. That’s what makes it even more meaningful. Looking at the stern composition and subject of this image, not to mention that it's in black and white, I am fairly certain I was watching a lot of Fellini and Antonioni's classics at the time I took this image. I had long admired Utsavi’s music, so having the opportunity to collaborate with her was something I felt deeply grateful for. More importantly, this experience helped me overcome a quiet anxiety I had developed about photographing people in public spaces. What began as a simple collaboration gradually reopened a creative door for me. It reminded me why I was drawn to photographing people in the first place and gave me the confidence to return to it without hesitation. The gesture is simple, yet deeply human — care expressed without words. Gulabi took her last breath in February 2025. This image, and the series as a whole, is one I return to often. It fills me with quiet pride to know that her presence will continue to live on through these photographs for years to come. The series reflects on aging as a state of dignity rather than decline. It invites us to reconsider what we overlook: the beauty of routine, the intimacy of silence, and the emotional landscapes contained within everyday life. This image is the second piece in the series. At the beginning of this project, I believed freedom meant the absence of restraint—an escape from all forms of binding. However, through the process of creating this work, my understanding of freedom shifted. The body in the image is tethered by ropes, suggesting entanglement with reality, emotion, or fate. Birds circle the sky above, embodying instinct, desire, and untamed movement. A red glow pulses beneath the figure, symbolizing an inner force—caught between suppression and momentum. Freedom, I came to realize, is not defined by being unbound, but by the willingness to move forward despite restraint.
