Thank goodness for second-hand winter-wear stores, for the spirit of adventure needed to travel, and for a wife that pushes me fully out of my comfort zone, onto a horse, and into the Kazak mountains. This was a landmark moment for us, just before our fifth anniversary, and the beginning of our horse-riding obsession,. For me personally, it was also the end of my drive to baby my gear; there's only so many times your Q2 can bump against a stainless steel saddle before you decide, hey, never mind the scratches. Our toes went numb in the sub-zero temperatures, our guide-dog ate our lunch, and we found ourselves in pitch-darkness, navigating only by the village lights in the far distance.
