Project Kolkata serves women who are currently or formerly in the sex trade. Project Kolkata partners local NGOs to conduct health screenings and health education for these women and their children. Human trafficking remains a significant problem in India. West Bengal, where Kolkata is the capital and largest city of, ranks consistently at the top of states with the highest number of human trafficking incidents and resulting crime rates. Most of the victims are women and children, transported through the state’s borders of Nepal and Bangladesh, to be recruited into the sex trade. Many of the women who are actively in the sex trade came to our health screening wearing masks. This image was shot at the newly built Jurong Lake Gardens, on the bridge facing towards Cascade Pavilion. Using a full-spectrum converted NEX-6 with a 16mm F2.8 prime lens and an 850nm filter, the result is a high-contrast sky with glowing foliage while the dark roof of the pavilion grounds the composition. Coincidentally, two ladies in dresses happened to be walking through, appearing bright white in the shot and naturally drawing the eye to the centre. The pavilion opening also frames them from within, almost like a screen inside the image. Back then, it didn’t just mark a birthday, but also a personal milestone, one that was of pausing, reflecting, and choosing to step into a new decade with curiosity and courage. This image wasn’t easy to capture. Iceland is known for its powerful winds, and flying a drone against those winds meant that the drone's battery would drain much more quickly. I quickly realised that flying harder was not the way to go, and that I had to think differently. Instead of forcing my way through the wind, I had to allow the wind to work with me. So I landed the drone, hopped into the car with my friends, and drove nearly two kilometres ahead before launching my drone again, allowing the winds to guide me as I surveyed the landscape. By then, a storm was approaching, and I felt a strong sense of urgency, but I knew I had to stay focused and calm. Then this river stood out amongst the smaller streams, carving its way into the distance. In that moment, I knew I had to find the right composition. After capturing the shot, I felt an immense sense of satisfaction and elation. Not just because I succeeded technically, but because the photograph embodied something deeper. This lizard is an ancient species and a much loved symbol of the island. In the last decade numbers are down 80%, since snake eggs have been finding their way to Ibiza hidden in the roots of imported olive trees from mainland Spain. The snakes have multiplied hugely in numbers and have been killing and eating the lizards, who have no defence against the snakes. People living on Ibiza are coming together to try and save the beloved lizard, by making snake traps and lizard sanctuaries where hopefully numbers can recover. I was collaborating with Joanna Hruby, of Theatre of the Ancients, a puppet maker and performance artist. Joanna was putting on a Christmas play about the lizard and snake problem, at Can Cristofol farm. The play was a version of Shakespeare’s Room & Juliet, ‘Un Amor Impossible’…. Or ‘an impossible love’ between two species who can not co-exist on the island. With children dressed in amazing hand make costumes, the feuding families of the original Shakespeare play were instead lizards and snakes. Juliet, played by Fallon, was Juliet and fell in love with Romeo, a snake. In this portrait we see Fallon as Juliet, photographed at sunset in the orange garden at Can Cristofol.
