It felt like such a rare sight in Singapore to see a vending machine standing in the middle of nowhere, tucked under some of the new HDB flats. That day the sunlight was so strong that it gave the glass surface this crystal-like texture, while the leaves shimmered and trembled in the light. I was drawn to the scene and then suddenly realised the glass wall was like a mirror reflecting the trees and everything. Then, amazingly, this woman in a colourful dress walked past, so I pressed my camera against the wall and captured this dreamy yet slightly unsettling moment in which she seemed to split into two selves inside the mirror. What fascinates me most about photography is how it can blur the line between the real and the surreal through things like shadow, reflection, and composition. At the time, I had stepped away from pursuing photography professionally and had shifted my focus to working as a color grading artist, keeping photography primarily for personal expression. Photographing this moment became more meaningful than I initially expected. I had long admired Utsavi’s music, so having the opportunity to collaborate with her was something I felt deeply grateful for. More importantly, this experience helped me overcome a quiet anxiety I had developed about photographing people in public spaces. What began as a simple collaboration gradually reopened a creative door for me. It reminded me why I was drawn to photographing people in the first place and gave me the confidence to return to it without hesitation. This is Ujiie Yoshihiro, owner of Black Sun Jazz Club in Kabukicho, Shinjuku. On my first evening in Shinjuku, I stumbled into his bar by chance. From our very first interaction, it became my local—somewhere I returned to every day. I took his portrait that first night, and it meant so much to him that when I returned to Japan, I made a second portrait. This image will always remind me of the warmth and kindness I experienced in a place I knew nothing about, completely on my own. I always admired Hiro’s pride in his work and the camaraderie he created around him. Hiro, as he likes to be called, welcomed me in on my first night and unknowingly gave me a place to belong. I felt very isolated and I was dealing with a lot. During a night out I booked a solo trip to Berlin. I had never been on a plane or abroad on my own. My first night there was cold and I could not sleep so I decided to get my camera out and take some photos to pass the time. A car sped through a set of traffic lights and this is the image that was created. It gave me a sense of clarity within my life and the trip as a whole helped me move forward and moulded me. I look back on this image often when I am feeling rudderless or that I am not achieving personal goals.
