Thank goodness for second-hand winter-wear stores, for the spirit of adventure needed to travel, and for a wife that pushes me fully out of my comfort zone, onto a horse, and into the Kazak mountains. This was a landmark moment for us, just before our fifth anniversary, and the beginning of our horse-riding obsession,. For me personally, it was also the end of my drive to baby my gear; there's only so many times your Q2 can bump against a stainless steel saddle before you decide, hey, never mind the scratches. Our toes went numb in the sub-zero temperatures, our guide-dog ate our lunch, and we found ourselves in pitch-darkness, navigating only by the village lights in the far distance. We soaked in the festival atmosphere while waiting for the fireworks to start, and feeling the chill, went straight for hot food. What intrigued me most, though, was the long queue for Gelato. Very cold temperatures, and people were still happily lining up for ice cream — now thats a sight. What struck me most about the whole evening was the atmosphere. Hundreds of people gathered in the dark, yet it was completely calm — everyone quietly enjoying their snacks, then tilting their heads skyward in collective appreciation of the fireworks above.
