Thinness is often immediately criticized, pathologized, or condemned, while other visibly unhealthy body standards can be publicly celebrated or protected from criticism. Both can carry serious health implications. This work explores how quickly aesthetics become moralized, and how differently people are treated depending on which body ideal they represent. The photograph is ultimately about presence, vulnerability, beauty, and the freedom to exist beyond simplified social narratives. This image is meant to preserve her presence — not as a statement of perfection or pathology, but as a human being who deserved to be seen with dignity, sensitivity, and depth. Through intimate portraiture and conceptual imagery, the project examines the evolving narratives of womanhood. Most of my long-term projects have delved into themes of female, body consciousness and self-perception, incorporating visual textures such as scars, stretch marks, and skin as symbols of growth and transformation. By using natural light, deep contrasts, and experimental compositions, I aim to challenge conventional beauty standards while emphasizing the poetic essence of imperfection. This photograph is one of the works in the ongoing project G-Book. G-Book - MASTERPIECE, STEP BY STEP, YEAR BY YEAR. From the first line to the final session, she returned, healed, and returned again. Working with a master of traditional Taiwanese tattooing, a simple outline grew into a full-back composition. The piece is not only ink on skin, but a ledger of years—discipline, trust, and craft. Durch unsere Gespräche verstand ich immer mehr, welchen Druck sie als Frau getragen hatte — durch Familie, Gesellschaft und die Erwartungen, die an sie gestellt wurden. Mir wurde bewusst, dass Frauen aus unterschiedlichen Ländern oft ähnliche Zweifel, Belastungen und Kämpfe mit dem eigenen Selbstwert erleben. Als Freundin wollte ich sie an ihre Schönheit, ihre Stärke und ihren Wert erinnern. Fotografie ist die Sprache, die ich am besten kenne, und ich hoffte, dass ich ihr durch meine Kamera helfen könnte, sich selbst wiederzusehen. Ich habe ihr Aussehen nicht verändert. Abgesehen von Farb- und Tonanpassungen bleibt das Bild dem Moment treu: echt, ehrlich und kraftvoll. In meinen Porträts von Frauen interessiert mich besonders das Zusammenspiel von Sanftheit und Stärke. Ich glaube, dass Schönheit keinen festen Maßstab hat. Jeder Mensch trägt seine eigene Form von Schönheit in sich — und vielleicht ist der schönste Zustand einfach, man selbst zu sein. Dieses Foto ist die Aufzeichnung einer Frau, die wieder aufsteht — nicht als jemand, der zu einer anderen Person geworden ist, sondern als jemand, der zu sich selbst zurückkehrt. Relearning Herself This portrait was taken by the sea in Rostock, during a time when my friend was slowly recovering from a difficult chapter in her life and learning to reconnect with herself. Through our conversations, I came to understand the pressure she had carried as a woman — from family, society, and the expectations placed on her. I realized that women from different countries often share similar doubts, burdens, and struggles with self-worth. As her friend, I wanted to remind her of her beauty, strength, and value. Photography is the language I know best, so I hoped that through my camera, I could help her see herself again. I did not alter her appearance. Apart from color and tonal adjustments, the image remains true to the moment: real, honest, and powerful. In my portraits of women, I am always drawn to the coexistence of softness and strength. I believe beauty has no fixed standard. Every person carries their own form of beauty, and perhaps the most beautiful state is simply to be oneself.
