Virgin exhibitor here. Timor Leste has been a place that's close to my heart since I first travelled there in 2018, and again in 2024. So felt it was only fitting to showcase something from there for my first exhibition 😊 Having gained independence only in 2002, Timor is Asia's youngest country. Inspired after watching John Pilger's documentary 'Death of a Nation: The Timor Conspiracy', I set out in search to better understand how a country is post-war. I solo travelled around Timor for 2 months capturing different stories and lived experiences during the war from Timorese folks, and learnt so much about what happened during, before, and after the war from a local's perspective. It was one of the most eye-opening, truly heartwarming, and utterly heart-wrenching experiences of my life, but what stuck was the wisdom, quiet strength, resilience and beauty of the Timorese which are forever etched in me. This also kick-started my journey towards questioning Western media reportages, biases, and their heavy but not necessarily full-picture influence on us, their global audience. We really do need to hear more voices from within, not just Western perspectives. It was early morning when this 6–8-week-old lion cub wanted to leave the bush to play with its sibling. Each time they wandered too far, their mother would lift her head and call them back. The cycle repeated multiple times, testing boundaries and her patience. This moment was captured when one cub refused to listen. Instead of calling again, the mother walked over and lifted her cub, carrying it back to safety. As someone who loves capturing lines, symmetry and geometry, this spot was on the top of my list of places to visit in the city. When I arrived it in the morning, the play of light and shadow was just perfect. I waited for a while, hoping for a subject to step into the frame and add a sense of scale and depth. I stayed at the 4Sky Resort, up in a mountain. It was our 600 days together with my long distance relationship girlfriend, and also it was our first oversea trip together. So outside our camp house there are chairs and small table. We listen to music, enjoying the night view with full of stars, that we did not have in the city. We had a deep talk on that night, discussing on how we had been through so far, and the dream we have for the future. Before we going to sleep, we take some photo of the sky for a token of memories.
