Moored at the harbor, it no longer felt like a machine in motion, but something heavy and worn, finally allowed to rest. That was what I wanted to hold onto in this photograph. In black and white, the vessel loses the distraction of color and becomes almost entirely weight, surface, and shape. The dark hull, the ropes pulled tight, and the still water beside it all seem to carry the fatigue of a long day’s work. Across the water, the city remains lit and distant. But here, in the foreground, the ship feels quieter and older, as if the labor of the day still lingers in its body. Perhaps that is why the black and white version felt right to me. It does not show the ship at its most vivid. It shows it at its most exhausted.
