This photograph was taken during a collaboration with singer-songwriter Utsavi Jha. At the time, I had stepped away from pursuing photography professionally and had shifted my focus to working as a color grading artist, keeping photography primarily for personal expression. Photographing this moment became more meaningful than I initially expected. I had long admired Utsavi’s music, so having the opportunity to collaborate with her was something I felt deeply grateful for. More importantly, this experience helped me overcome a quiet anxiety I had developed about photographing people in public spaces. What began as a simple collaboration gradually reopened a creative door for me. It reminded me why I was drawn to photographing people in the first place and gave me the confidence to return to it without hesitation. This image, therefore, represents more than a portrait—it marks a personal turning point where photography once again became something I could approach with curiosity and freedom. | Nandan Nabodit

Living in Happyland In 2019, I spent a weekend in Aroma, Tondo, Manila — an informal settlement often known as Happyland. The name comes from Hapilan, meaning dump site, a reminder of the harsh environment the community lives in. I was invited by a friend who runs a shelter for boys in the area. During my time there, I met children and families living in extreme poverty, many relying on scavenging at nearby dump sites to survive. Yet what stayed with me was not just the hardship, but the warmth of the people. I was welcomed openly, with laughter, curiosity, and generosity that felt deeply sincere. As a photographer, I struggled with how to tell this story. Rather than focusing only on deprivation, I chose to document moments of hope — the smiles, friendships, and quiet resilience of everyday life. The children spoke freely about their dreams of becoming nurses, engineers, and software developers, believing strongly in a future beyond their present circumstances. This experience reshaped my understanding of happiness, showing me how dignity, community, and hope endure even in the most difficult places. | Victor Tan KH

This photograph was taken in 2019 in South Iceland during a road trip to celebrate turning thirty that year. Back then, it didn’t just mark a birthday, but also a personal milestone, one that was of pausing, reflecting, and choosing to step into a new decade with curiosity and courage. This image wasn’t easy to capture. Iceland is known for its powerful winds, and flying a drone against those winds meant that the drone's battery would drain much more quickly. I quickly realised that flying harder was not the way to go, and that I had to think differently. Instead of forcing my way through the wind, I had to allow the wind to work with me. So I landed the drone, hopped into the car with my friends, and drove nearly two kilometres ahead before launching my drone again, allowing the winds to guide me as I surveyed the landscape. By then, a storm was approaching, and I felt a strong sense of urgency, but I knew I had to stay focused and calm. Then this river stood out amongst the smaller streams, carving its way into the distance. In that moment, I knew I had to find the right composition. After capturing the shot, I felt an immense sense of satisfaction and elation. Not just because I succeeded technically, but because the photograph embodied something deeper. It reminded me to adapt instead of resist, to pause and rethink instead of pushing blindly forward, and that sometimes, working with the forces around us leads to something far more meaningful. | Nicholas
