The other Japanese toilet I began photographing Japanese-style squat toilets in 2019. Unlike Western sit-down toilets, squat toilets and their surrounding tiles are often vibrant, eclectic, and unexpected. Even in 2026, you can still occasionally open a bathroom door and encounter a Japanese-style toilet. However, many of the ones that remain are being replaced with modern toilets, especially in schools, public buildings, and coffee shops. Along with them, a quiet, unspoken culture is gradually disappearing across Japan. 「もうひとつの日本のトイレ」 私は2019年から和式トイレの写真を撮り始めた。一般的な洋式の座るタイプのトイレとは異なり、和式トイレとその周囲のタイルには、鮮やかで、折衷的で、思いがけない特徴がある。 2026年になった今でも、ときどきトイレの扉を開けると、昔ながらの和式トイレに出会うことがある。しかし、残っているものの多くは、特に学校や公共施設、喫茶店などで、近代的な洋式トイレへと置き換えられている。そうしたトイレとともに、静かで、言葉にはされない文化も、日本各地から少しずつ姿を消しつつある。
