One of my favorite things to do whenever I’m there is to photograph the older side of the city, the one I was born and raised in. When people think of Dubai, they often picture skyscrapers and luxury, but there’s so much more to the city beyond that image. This photo shows an abra which is a small wooden boat used to ferry people across the creek. It’s a simple, everyday mode of transport that many people don’t discover until they experience the city firsthand. Amidst a crowded morning of ritual bathing, I focused on a woman from the Mer (Maher) community, whose traditional tattoos function as permanent jewellery, a cultural identity inscribed onto skin. Her gold-plated Vedhla earrings and red tie-dyed saree reflect a living heritage that continues to exist within contemporary India.  I intentionally chose a frame that conceals her face. The absence of identity shifts attention toward texture, tradition, light, and ritual rather than individuality. The golden sunlight interacting with wet skin and tribal markings transforms a simple act of prayer into a timeless visual narrative. I made very minimal edits to the image, but the light on that day—softened by fog—transports us into what feels like a photography studio or an artist’s workshop from the 19th century.           <title><![CDATA[In December 2025, I mentored a group of medical students from Lee Kong Chian Medical School on their overseas community involvement project (OCIP) in Kolkata.   Project Kolkata serves women who are currently or formerly in the sex trade. Project Kolkata partners local NGOs to conduct health screenings and health education for these women and their children.   Human trafficking remains a significant problem in India. West Bengal, where Kolkata is the capital and largest city of, ranks consistently at the top of states with the highest number of human trafficking incidents and resulting crime rates. Most of the victims are women and children, transported through the state’s borders of Nepal and Bangladesh, to be recruited into the sex trade. During winter, the landscape transforms into a quiet monochrome world where layers of mountains, forests, and snow shape the atmosphere of the village.  Rather than focusing on dramatic moments, the work observes stillness and atmosphere. The village appears small against the surrounding mountains, while a lone hut in the foreground anchors the scene within the vast winter landscape. Snow softens the terrain and simplifies the forms, allowing the quiet character of the place to emerge.  As someone who primarily photographs street and documentary work, where moments unfold quickly and unpredictably, standing in this winter landscape was a very different experience.
