Gentleness may exist without consciousness, but loneliness must be consciously felt. Gentle Protection and the Loneliness of Being. An opened umbrella covers a shopping basket. From a distance, it resembles a standing figure, presenting the form of “protection.” Yet this protection does not arise from consciousness; it is merely the accidental arrangement of objects. Behavior can be visualized.Posture can be imitated. But understanding cannot be replicated. The umbrella appears gentle, as if deliberately guarding what lies beneath it. Yet it does not know that it is protecting. It cannot comprehend the rain, the objects, or loneliness. Loneliness does not belong to the unconscious. It belongs to the being that is aware of its own existence. To be human is not defined by form or movement, but by an awareness of being — by understanding the distance between oneself and the world. Gentleness can be observed.Loneliness must be endured. | Wee

This photograph marks the first friendship I made on my first trip to Japan. This is Ujiie Yoshihiro, owner of Black Sun Jazz Club in Kabukicho, Shinjuku. On my first evening in Shinjuku, I stumbled into his bar by chance. From our very first interaction, it became my local—somewhere I returned to every day. I took his portrait that first night, and it meant so much to him that when I returned to Japan, I made a second portrait. This image will always remind me of the warmth and kindness I experienced in a place I knew nothing about, completely on my own. I always admired Hiro’s pride in his work and the camaraderie he created around him. Hiro, as he likes to be called, welcomed me in on my first night and unknowingly gave me a place to belong. His warmth and kindness, turned a chance encounter into a lasting reason to return. | Kareem Berjaoui

The body rests where it does not belong. Draped across a splintered stump, the figure appears both offered and abandoned, suspended between elevation and collapse. Remnants lie bare and exposed; nakedness here is not intimacy but the anonymity of unadorned erasure. The coarse, surreal landscape remains indifferent to the scene—a neutral observer, if not entirely apathetic. In this realm, nothing is settled with certainty. Is this sleep, surrender, or aftermath? | Yamedre
