Over the 15 years I spent living next to her we chatted & exchanged views on all sorts - politics, jokes & inevitably, sometimes the weather. Her stories about previous generations of people who lived on our road were fascinating - the lady who lived in the house before her said that, during the war, a bomb dropped in our garden! Sarah used to be part of the Portobello arts scene in the 60's, so understands creative expression. When I suggested a photoshoot she was very much up for it. She was the matriarch of the family of all our families on our road. Rather than a mournful event, we celebrated her life and marked a new chapter in our family’s collective memory. She was the last of us to be interred; the rising cost and difficulty of burial mean that those who follow her will not have the same physical anchor. Without the permanence of a grave, future generations risk becoming only faint memories. In this shift, these photographs are meant to do more than just document.
