Here in urban Singapore, we have the 3rd largest species of deer in world (Sambar deer/Rusa unicolor). They occasionally venture out to areas near roads, to feed on vegetation that grows outside of the secondary forests. Unseen by many, these shy creatures prefer to avoid human encounters as they feed throughout the night. As responsible motorists/cyclists, we can all make an effort to observe a safe speed, while on roads flanking the central catchment area. I've been there many, many times over the years and every time I visit it feels different : the light changes, the wildlife you see changes and the flora and fauna change too. This time in the evening there is my favourite. You feel the park slowing down, wildlife coming to rest as the light fades through daylight blues to beautiful oranges, yellows and reds. I was walking to my grandparents' graves to say goodbye. It was my first time going there all by myself, and I felt like at that moment, I had truly become a mature adult. Along the way, I 'borrowed' a few lotus seed pods from a neighbor's pond to bring them a taste of summer. To me, memory is like these loofah vines: fragile and seasonal, yet stubbornly clinging to the sturdy trunk of home.
