In 2022, months before my brother and sister-in-law got married, my paternal granddad passed on, missing his chance to see his very first grandchild get married. And being the secondary photographer at your sibling's wedding with that reminder just flashing through your mind the entire day, it silently increases the weight of your role and responsibility to document the occasion. Photographed is my paternal grandma who is still alive but does not remember my granddad due to her dementia and my brother alongside my sister-in-law who is telling my grandma that they were getting married that very day. The reason I chose this photo among all the photos I shot that day was because of how intimate it felt and how it reminded me of the importance of documentation. Although my granddad never made it to the wedding, my grandma did and for that, I'm thankful I got to document these moments during such a loaded occasion. I am mainly a self proclaimed “cat photographer” now since I’ve been taking pictures of street cats in a park that is inside a super crowded area. I am not quite sure how the first batch of cats got there but they are mostly the offsprings of stray cats being abandoned there years ago. I chose this picture particularly due to the fact that the moment is just so immaculate that he cat is posing like a guy with cool aura, that’s it. I felt very isolated and I was dealing with a lot. During a night out I booked a solo trip to Berlin. I had never been on a plane or abroad on my own. My first night there was cold and I could not sleep so I decided to get my camera out and take some photos to pass the time. A car sped through a set of traffic lights and this is the image that was created. It gave me a sense of clarity within my life and the trip as a whole helped me move forward and moulded me. I look back on this image often when I am feeling rudderless or that I am not achieving personal goals. Final year of university. Three best friends. No car, no plan, and jackets that lied about being waterproof. The goal? Reach the lake at Lake District National Park. The reality? The best failed attempt. We rented a tiny cabin on the park’s edge and set off like adventurers… who forgot to read the instructions. We marched through sideways rain, squelchy grass, and somehow… a factory? We climbed hills, jumped questionable fences, greeted sheep like old friends, and pretended we knew where we were going. Our itinerary included a village in the deeper ends of Kashmir. I was drawn to the daily life of the locals, how they travelled across the village and beyond, and their seemingly vanishing connectivity to the outside world. Among the many faces that I saw, this gentleman drew my attention. His quiet demeanor and slow movements welcomed me to look at the daily life of his village through his eyes. There was something about his presence, warm and welcoming, yet deeply reserved. In my attempts to not be overbearing, I was able to break through and had the longest conversation with him and I forgot about trying to find other villagers. I have no regrets about it as his point of view stayed with me and I plan to take it with me. It was his matured yet innocent expression that stayed with me. He had forgotten to smile in all his years of living in the village. Whenever I shoot portraits, I try to lighten the moment to make sure I get the most authentic expression from the subject. But with him, it felt like I would lie to the world if I did that. It, perhaps seemed unnecessary. His face carried a calm intrigue, still, composed, and full of unspoken stories. I was with my friend walking around the area and I happened to see this lovely couple having their pre-wedding photoshoot right in front of the water fountain at the venue. I realised I had another angle that's a bit closer to the couple than what the photographer intended, and I decided to take my shot! I love seeing wedding photography / videography, as somebody who did wedding videography before. My vision for this photo is, well, I hope everyone in their lives, be it single or attached or married, I hope that you (as the black shirt man) remember to love yourself while loving your inner child / your partner / your spouse (as the woman in the wedding dress). The shadows of the Woman's feet being lifted up by the man represents that, everyone regardless of their marital status, should have love in their life where they can overcome any obstacles together and be happy / contented with oneself (be it alone or as a nucleus). The natural Rainbow formed behind them was such a magnificent feature to be present in their photo. I hope everyone can remember that there are different colours to defining love and our feelings, because love is never a fixed shade or colour.
