Why, after all this time, are compact digital cameras—icons of the 2000s—making a comeback after 20 years?
The reason is simple: nostalgia. While film cameras have been at the center of the nostalgia boom, rising prices for equipment and film, as well as shifts in the core culture demographic, have caused that trend to settle down a bit. This is where compact digital cameras have stepped in.
Shooting against the light produces unique highlights, which is quite interesting.
Surprisingly, with an aperture of f/2.8, it still captures well even as the sun sets.
Compact and lightweight at just 149g, but with no image stabilization, it’s easy to lose focus and get a blurry shot.
For Generation Z, who are at the heart of contemporary culture, compact digital cameras are the ultimate devices for reliving personal narratives. Almost every household had one, and for this generation, whose childhood albums were shot with these cameras, the tone, noise, and tactile feel of a compact digital camera are deeply ingrained in their eyes and bodies as true participants of the 2000s era.
The color of the foliage is distinctly FUJIFILM.
As someone who lived through that era, using a compact digital camera brought back memories like a slideshow—climbing mountains with my father before school, or setting out alone for the sea with my first camera.
Next, let’s look at the purchased for 4,400 yen.
Weighing just 135g, it’s extremely light and fits easily in your pocket.
I took to the streets of Ginza on a rainy day for some street photography.
As expected from a camera nearly 20 years old, it produces images with a distinctive noise.
Compared to FUJIFILM, Nikon’s greens are more subdued.
The appeal of compact digital cameras may lie in the fact that, with their limited color and image quality compared to modern cameras, they leave more room for imagination. When viewing the photographs, you naturally find yourself trying to sense the atmosphere of the moment.
While it does have a flash, the built-in image stabilization is not very effective, reminding you of the importance of staying still when shooting—a fundamental of photography.
When you think about it, being able to capture such enjoyable photos for under 5,000 yen—and on Mercari, no less—is quite a luxury.
With a macro function, it’s also possible to shoot subjects up close.
