As inflation, insecure employment and widening inequality continue to shape everyday life, the project explores how economic hardship is reflected not only in the lives of individuals and communities, but also in the landscapes and places that surround them. Through evocative and sometimes darkly humorous images, Bleak Britain looks beyond the statistics to consider the human experience of financial struggle, resilience and decline. Yet even within these realities, there remains an unmistakable British ability to find humour, optimism and absurdity a small reminder that, somehow, we can still laugh along the way.
